History / Importance

According to ancient legends, Sage Gautam once unintentionally committed the sin of killing a cow. To free himself from this sin, he performed deep penance on the Brahmagiri Mountains, worshipping Lord Shiva with utmost devotion.

Pleased by his penance, Lord Shiva released the sacred waters of the Ganga from His matted hair on Brahmagiri. This divine appearance of Ganga at the mountain is known today as Gangadwar, the earliest point where the river emerges.

However, the strong flow of the river made it difficult for Sage Gautam to bathe and complete his rituals. He then surrounded the flowing water with Kusha grass, creating a stable kund. The river slowed down and formed a calm, sacred pond where the sage finally purified himself.

This holy spot came to be known as Kushavart Tirth — “Kusha + Aavartan,” meaning a kund formed with the help of Kusha grass.
Today, Kushavart is worshipped as the spiritual starting point of the River Godavari, from where the river begins its long journey towards the sea.
