Nashik Tourism: Famous Places, Historical Sites & Nature Spots

Overview

Navshya Ganpati Temple, located at Anandvalli near Gangapur–Someshwar Road in Nashik, is one of the most revered Ganesh temples in the region. The temple is widely known for its belief that Lord Ganesha fulfills devotees’ wishes (Navas), which is why it is popularly called Navshya Ganpati. Thousands of devotees from Nashik and nearby districts visit this temple throughout the year, especially on auspicious days and during Ganesh festivals.

The temple is situated on the banks of the holy Godavari River, adding to its spiritual significance and serene atmosphere.

History / Importance

The Navshya Ganpati Temple has a rich history dating back approximately 300–400 years, originating during the Peshwa period. The temple was built in 1774 by Raghoba Peshwa and his wife Anandibai, both ardent devotees of Lord Ganesha.

According to historical records, the couple was blessed with a son named Vinayak on 15 August 1764, after which the village was named Anandvalli. Soon after, construction of the temple began as an expression of gratitude and devotion.

Prominent Peshwa rulers such as Shreemant Madhavrao Peshwa and Matoshri Gopikabai were also known devotees of Navshya Ganpati. Although a palace built by Raghoba Peshwa nearby was destroyed during British rule in 1818, the temple remained unharmed, symbolizing its enduring spiritual importance.

The idol of Lord Ganesha is especially admired for its expressive and lifelike eyes, which devotees believe reflect divine presence.
