Shree Modkeshwar Ganapati Mandir is one of the 21 famous Varadvinayak temples in Maharashtra, situated on the banks of the Godavari River in Nashik. Popularly known as the “Modkeshwar Ganpati,” this temple is renowned for its self-manifested (Swayambhu) Ganesh idol. The temple is considered one of the oldest and most revered temples in Nashik, attracting devotees from across the region.

History & Importance

The exact date of the temple’s origin is unclear, but it is believed to be around 400 to 500 years old. Ancient texts such as the Ganesh Purana, the Panchvati Yatra Darshan, and Godavari Mahatmya mention the significance of Modkeshwar.

According to legend, Lord Ganesha once received a special modak (sweet dumpling) from the gods. While traveling through the skies, the modak fell near the Godavari River in Nashik. To commemorate this divine event, Ganesha appeared in the form of a Swayambhu idol at this location. The Kshema Kalyani family discovered the idol following a dream and built a small temple, which eventually became the famous Modkeshwar Mandir. The idol itself is shaped like a modak, giving the temple its unique name. Today, the temple is managed by the eighth generation of the Kshema Kalyani family.

The temple complex also houses a small shrine of Kashi Vishweshwar Mahadev. Inside the sanctum, the Modkeshwar idol is adorned with sindoor (vermillion), and the temple walls feature idols of Vishnu, Hanuman, Vitthal, and Ram-Lakshman-Sita. The sanctum is complemented by a prakash (circumambulatory) path with statues of Riddhi-Siddhi, representing Ganesha’s consorts.
